I served in the Signals and was stationed in Nicosia in 1971 next to the now disused airport. Lightnings used to overfly the airport at least twice daily, two runs at rooftop height followed by the coupe de grace, runway level and the "stand on the tail" finale. Never failed to get us out of our huts! Was told the RAF were "claiming air space" and have since found out the airport used to be RAF Nicosia. Was it something the RAF had to or was there some other story to it. Can anyone enlighten me after all these years? Incidentally saw the Cranfield T5 go through its "fast taxi run" last December!
