Gloster Javelin - Survivor XH892
FAW.9R XH892 - Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum, Flixton, Suffolk
Javelin FAW.9R XH892 at Flixton, 2nd September 2019; Richard E Flagg
XH892 was delivered to 5 MU on 23rd April 1958 for storage prior to conversion to FAW.9(F/R) at Staverton in July 1959. By April 1960 she had entered service with 23 Squadron (coded J). In 1962, she was converted to FAW.9R at Bitteswell, re-entering service with 64 Squadron in October 1964 (coded E). On 20th February 1965 she moved to 29 Squadron (coded B), and was retired into storage with 27 MU on 6th April 1967. She was allocated for preservation and joined the historic aircraft collection at RAF Colerne (the genesis of the RAF Museum).
When the collection was dispersed with the station's closure, XH892 made the journey to Duxford under the ownership of Jeff Hawke. The airframe sat there for a while, looking increasingly worse for wear. However, once the Imperial War Museum got hold of XH897, XH892 moved on to the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum who have fully restored her. A full repaint was interrupted by the pandemic and the paint job is now suffering once more, as the photo above shows.
