McDonnell-Douglas/BAC F-4K/M Phantom II - Survivor XT914
FGR.2 XT914 - Wattisham Station Heritage Museum, Wattisham Camp, Suffolk
Phantom FGR.2 XT914 at Wattisham Station Heritage Museum, 22nd September 2022; William Masterson
XT914 served with 14, 56, 74 and 92 Squadrons plus 228 OCU and was one of the last RAF fighter jets to be based at RAF Wattisham. The airframe retired from service in November 1992 at RAF Leeming, where it was put on display as a gate guard.
Not too many years after, the aircraft was then transferred to RAF Brampton to become a gate guardian there as well. It was still in generally excellent condition bar a bit of faded paintwork, with much of her cockpit contents intact.
With RAF Brampton's closure at the end of 2013, it was reported that XT914 might move to RAF Wittering, but with the early cessation of Harrier operations that obviously fell through. Happily efforts at Wattisham to bring a Phantom 'home' then came to fruition and XT914 was formally transferred to the Army on 12th January 2012 prior to being transported to the Wattisham Station Heritage Museum at Wattisham Camp (former RAF Wattisham, Phantom station) for further display duties.
XT914 departed Brampton on 8th March 2012 and the aircraft has since been restored and repainted. The Wattisham Station Heritage Museum host regular open days and photo shoots, at which you can see XT914.
