Phantom FGR.2 XV497 at Flixton, 8th June 2023; William Masterson

XV497 had a busy life in the RAF and managed to serve with lots of squadrons - 6, 41, 228 OCU, 17, 56, 23, 92, 19, 29, 1435 Flight and finally 74 Squadron! She was retired in November 1992 and delivered to Coningsby for use by the fire section.

Saved from scrapping by 23 Squadron, XV497 was repainted in a Falklands colour scheme by them and roaded from Coningsby to Waddington to be put on display outside the 23 Sqn HQ within RAF Waddington. Reintroduced to public display at the 2002 airshow, she was usually opened up for visitors to have their photos taken sitting in the cockpits - still earning her keep after all these years! Her official role was that of ground instruction.

In late 2012 she was disposed of to Everett Aero and transported by road, in dismantled form, to Bentwaters. In July 2020 her owner placed her on loan to the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum. XV497 is now back together and on display.
