FG.1 XV586 - Morayvia, Kinloss, Scotland

Phantom FG.1 XV586 at RNAS Yeovilton, 7th July 2018; Damien Burke

XV586 first flew on the 11th of April 1969 and was delivered to RNAS Yeovilton on 25th June 1969. She served with 892 Sqn on HMS Ark Royal until 5th April 1977 when she joined 43(F) Sqn at RAF Leuchars. She then rejoined 892 Sqn on HMS Ark Royal until November 1978. Following major servicing at RAF St. Athan, she returned to Leuchars and served on 43(F) Sqn from 19th October 1979 to September 1989. She was then transferred to A&AEE at Boscombe Down, before retiring to Leuchars on 27th October 1989, as the 43(F) Sqn Gate Guardian, having accumulated a total of 3,770 flying hours.

Unfortunately with 43(F) Squadron's disbandment with the retirement of the Tornado F.3, and the upcoming closure of RAF Leuchars, she had to move on. Happily, she was relocated to RNAS Yeovilton as a part of Navy Wings in mid-May 2012. After her arrival, she was repainted back into her Royal Navy colours and was displayed within the station and could often been seen on static display at the Air Day's.

In more recent years the airframe had been tucked away undercover, being put up for sale in mid-2022. In 2023, it was revealed that the airframe had been acquired by Morayvia, where she will be on display for visitors to enjoy.

You guys are lucky she is still around. I was flying her with Sqn Ldr Martin Barnett in the back whilst on 43(F) Sqn at RAF Leuchars on the night of 18 Mar 1986. We had returned with a duff radar with plenty of fuel, and when I selected gear down the nose-gear refused to go down, along with a double utilities failure. We tried to blow the gear down with pneumatic air but to no avail. The FRCs advised 'Consider Ejection' but the N Sea was bloody cold that time of year so we decided to stay with it. Mark Wilson, Darn it, I missed her, where was she hiding? I didn't spot her on the programme map either. I am pleased she has had a proper paint job. I did manage to get one of those 892 Ark Royal polo shirts. Now if only she could be made airworthy. Maybe Mr Noble still has spare Speys from Thrust 2 days.

After two years at Yeovilton XV586 has been repainted in her original FAA colours, Number 010 on the side and and Ark Royal deck letter R on the tail. Static display at Yeovilton today 26 July 2014.

I spent awhile looking at this aircraft on Saturday explaining points of detail to a relative. I was an AA on these aircraft on 892 during 1970-1971-1972 after an exhausting spell on NASU carrying out heavy modifications and seemingly endless engine changes. I could still do one almost without looking at the book including that pig of throttle rigging. She was on static display at the Yeovilton Air Day yesterday. There was no info board with her, tape on either side of the canopy, presumably to keep the weather out. Daylight was visible though the jet pipes and small parts of the tail were missing. Despite all this, still a fine looking aircraft.

That probably explains why I saw a Phantom on a low-loader, or rather two, heading south on the M5 in Somerset yesterday!
