Avro Vulcan - Survivor XM606
B.2 XM606 - Eighth Air Force Museum, Barksdale AFB, Bossier City, Louisiana, USA
Vulcan B.2 XM606 at Barksdale, 1st May 2016; Owen O'Rourke
First flown in December 1963, XM606 was retired on 7th June 1982 and gifted to the 8th Air Force Museum at Barksdale AFB a week later. She has stood baking for many a year in bright sunshine and ended up looking very faded. She was repainted in high gloss camouflage in the early 2000s but the harsh sunshine has already begun bleaching the new paint job.
In common with other Vulcans preserved in the US she hasn't been looked after too well. The cockpit hatch is creased and cannot be opened, the nose oleo has collapsed leaving the aircraft with an odd nose-low incidence, all her tyres are flat and she generally needs some TLC.
